Heavy rain is set to impact large parts of the UK this weekend, with significant flooding risks. The Met Office has forecasted that a new wave of “heavy and thundery rain” will hit the south coast on Saturday, moving northwards through central and southern England and Wales overnight.
Earlier this week, southern England and Wales experienced intense rainfall on Thursday and Friday, causing some initial concerns. As of Saturday morning, a flood warning remains active in Ilston, south Wales. Additionally, two flood alerts are in effect for the area. The Environment Agency has also issued two flood alerts in south-west England, particularly around the Lower Avon River.

The Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, Dan Harris, has highlighted the complex nature of the upcoming weather. He explained that this weekend’s forecast involves an unusual meteorological pattern. This includes several bands of heavy, sometimes thundery rain swirling around a slow-moving low-pressure system. Due to these complexities, weather warnings may be updated as the situation develops.
For Saturday, expect a band of cloud and scattered rain to spread across England and Wales before heavier, thundery rain arrives in the south later in the day. Rainfall could be quite variable, with some areas experiencing 40-60mm of rain, while others might see up to 100mm. The heaviest rainfall is more likely in the southern regions covered by the warning.
Despite the challenging weather, parts of northern England are expected to enjoy some sunny and dry spells, continuing the trend from recent days. However, conditions will turn cloudier and milder as the weekend progresses. On Sunday, showers will move northwards, bringing heavy rain to central and southern parts of the UK. Cooler and fresher temperatures are anticipated for the upcoming week, but the overall forecast remains unsettled.
